How to support a grieving loved one

Everyone goes through difficult times and it can be hard to deal with. One of the most difficult things to deal with in life is the loss of someone you love. It is incredibly sad, and it can be very challenging to accept.

How to support a grieving loved one

Offer your support

Watching a loved one grieve can be almost as difficult as grieving yourself. You are often left feeling powerless and want to be there for them as much as you can. Many people are unsure how to go about this and our Customer Service department regularly receives questions from customers looking for a gift to show their support.

Be there for them

It sounds ever so simple, but just being there can make a huge difference. You don’t even need to talk, just the idea of having someone that will listen can be soothing.

Ask them what they need

We all grieve in our own way, which is why it’s important to know how best to be there for your loved one. As soon as you know, you can support them in a way that works for them.

Pay them sincere attention

It can be terribly difficult to talk about loss. It may help if you show your loved one that you are paying them sincere attention and listening to their needs. Simply said: if you want to be there for them, truly be there for them. This will allow them to truly open up and share their feelings.

Supporting grandparents through loss

For many young people, losing a grandparent is very painful. As well as your own grief, you are witness to the incredible loss suffered by your remaining grandparent as they adapt to living without their partner and being alone. While you can’t take away their grief or pain, you can definitely show them you are there for them and thinking of them, even with a small gesture, such as those shown below.

personalised cushion or pillow

Idea #1: Give them a personalised cushion to cuddle

One of the hardest parts of losing a partner is having to go to bed alone. By giving your grandparent a personalised cushion or pillow featuring a photo of their partner, you are giving them something physical to hold on to and offer at least a small amount of comfort.

Idea #2: Give them a personalised mug

If you want to give your grandparent a gift that will allow them to remember their partner every day, a personalised mug is a lovely option. Every time they have a cup of tea or coffee, they will see their special someone and remember the good times.

Idea #3: Give them a personalised puzzle

A personalised puzzle featuring their favourite photo is not only a lovely way to remember the partner they have lost, but also a way to fill their time and perhaps take their mind off their grief for a little while.

Idea #4: Give them a personalised candle

Burning a candle in remembrance of those we have lost is a long-standing tradition that can still bring comfort to this day. Add an extra special touch to this sweet ritual by giving your grandma or grandpa a personalised candle, featuring a photo of their partner. The perfect way to honour their memory.
